I mean, that’s because most of the starting spots are already filled with talent. Cronenworth, Manny, X, Ramon, Tatis, Merrill, Musgrove, King, Pivetta, Miller plus the whole stacked pen, Fermin, Sheets. There’s just not that much money left to throw around plus not that many more positions to play. We’re basically looking for a 1B/DH and maybe a backup catcher, and an SP, but only on cheap contracts. That’s not an easy task.
If Darvish’s money does come off the books in some capacity, I guess there might be 20 million left to spend, and that goes straight to an SP.

Tough to make a major move right now without extra money available though, I imagine.

From what I can see he has extreme control issues. Throws 97 though, and he was a first round pick in 2022 – so there’s the offhand possibility he can develop in our system. He’s only 22 so it’s not like it’s impossible, but it’s probably not likely he gets any better either. Still, it’s a minor league deal, so that only costs us $30k or so.

Probably amounts to nothing considering his struggles in NPB, but he’s still fairly young and evidently has the arm talent. Zero downside to taking a shot on him and seeing if our player development staff can work some magic.

He has struggled mightly but he throws gas and is only 22. Niebla is the most exciting part of this signing, definitely has way more upside than Randy Vasquez for example

lol I’m not “upset about it” but this really seems like scraping the bottom of the barrel. It’s one thing to give a struggling guy who has MLB experience another shot with a minor league deal. Those are often your AAAA types who keep showing flashes of high performance in AAA and just can’t translate it to MLB. But if we are to go with the general consensus that the JPL is roughly around AAA equivalent level of play and this guy couldn’t perform there either, seems like kind of a nothing-burger.
But you’re right, it’s only a minor league deal so ultimately doesn’t matter that much so why not. Niebla is good but not sure he’s THAT good.
