2026年3月31日（現地時間）、ロンドン・ウェンブリースタジアムで行われた国際親善試合、イングランド対日本。試合前は「ケイン・ライス・サカ不在の控えメンバーだから」という言い訳も込みでイングランドのホームゲームのはずだったが、そんな空気を23分に粉砕したのが三笘薫だった。
中村敬斗のパスを受けた三笘がウェンブリーのピッチを切り裂き、右足でボトムライトへ鮮やかに流し込んでゴール。そのままイングランドは反撃できず、日本代表が0-1で白星を飾った。2019年以降、日本代表はヨーロッパ勢に対して7勝1分けの無敗（イングランド、スコットランド、トルコ、ドイツ×2、クロアチア、スペイン、セルビア）という圧倒的な記録を更新。ワールドカップ前哨戦で世界に存在感を見せつけた。

Japan is one of the best teams when it comes to collective play. They have 0 egos. Everyone works hard and is disciplined. Add to that the fact they improved massively in ability over the last 10 years and you can not underestimate them. They’re a really good team and probably one of the “dark horses” for the World Cup.
