Miyamoto seems a smart guy. The same thing of plan any target is ridicolous. Quarter or semifinals nothing changes. Draws, injuries and bad/good referee matter a lot more. You can plan whatever you want but then you draw the death group, 3 key players injured themselves and a referee wrong call a pk: you are done for even in Final32.

Look I do agree but when your world cup exits have been to Belgium Croatia and Brazil in the last 3 competitions there is honestly not much you can complain about. The best team of a player in the Japanese side was arguably Frankfurt. With your prime stars who play for Sociedad, Liverpool, Monaco, Brighton missing you honestly can’t complain a lot here. Yes there should have been more hunger shown on the day. But losing to a Brazil team which even at their worst generation is a top 10 side in the world is not a complete failure.

Brazil just stood around with the ball, zero creativity, poor team selection and still dominated. 2.07 xg to 0.33 xg. 70% possession. 300+ more passes. 5 big chances to 0.

Asking us to not over respect our opponents after a game where we played against fuckin Brazil is hilarious I can’t lie. Playing a low block against a team much better than you IS playing to your strengths. Doesn’t matter if they scored there and make it 2-0, they were inviting pressure letting Brazil keep attacking by parking a terrible bus. Japan did it in the first half, but failed in the second half because the coach want them to park the bus instead.

Japans mental game needs a lot of work because I can’t say with any degree of certainty that they wouldn’t have blown that lead. There’s still a mental element that Japan hasn’t overcome yet about the reckless belief that you are supposed to go to the final – not a goal, but a BELIEF. Look at Argentina – they played terribly for the majority of the tournament and limped into the final by the skin of their teeth and still only lost 1-0, even with Spain 100% controlling the game, and it was because they had the arrogance to believe that that was their spot. Japan has to internalize this because they need to stop thinking of their opponents like an equal opponent they need to beat or a better opponent they need to prove something to, but that EVERY team is just in their way for what they’ve already decided is theirs

日本もこれを体に染み込ませないといけない。相手を「倒すべき対等な敵」とか「何かを証明すべき格上」と考えるのをやめて、“すでに自分たちのものだと決めた場所”の前に立ち塞がっているだけの存在だと思えるようにならないと。

First there needs to be a mental change, both on the field and off the field. Besides the attitude and the tactical approach, there needs to be proper criticism and accountability. It can’t be that it’s always “fine, we’re happy with the result, we gave it all, it’s nobody’s fault, etc.” Let’s face it, this Japan is disappointing. It has shown it can beat any team in the world and yet… it hasn’t won an Asian Cup in ages and it keeps getting kicked out of the World Cup at the first knockout stage

I think the confidence is building, the low block will shift. I do think Brazil has a large part to play in that. They are very beatable, and I think given less injuries Japan takes the game. The creativity is growing and I think that’s going to be a huge strength as Japan grows.

I’ve been rewatching the 🇯🇵 vs 🇧🇷 game and the moment that frustrated me the most was in the 53rd minute. Japan had a counterattack 5 Japanese players against 3 Brazilian defenders. Junya Ito played an absolutely perfect, inch-perfect ball into Nakamura, who was inside the box. And Nakamura had options… But instead… he plays it to Ritsu Doan, who is already being marked. And I’m sorry, but Doan is not the player you want finishing that cross with a header. Japan were already 1-0 up. Ah, Nakamura… what have you done? Ahhh.

I didnt look like Japan was “parking the bus” on purpose, they just couldn’t contain Brazil anymore after Vinicius moved to the wing. Moriyasu subbed out Doan cause you could clearly see he was gassed out and tired as hell as he was tasked with marking Vinicius for the whole time.
