Honestly, it’s because it’s being worn wrong. The collar should be folded in half and worn pulled back off the neck. This is a very heavy, thick, embroidered wedding kimono that was shortened and the hem is a mess. The Obi is not tied in the back, it’s just hanging down. The idea is cool – the execution is not.

this recycling of an old kimono while still being able to actually wear it is more than most “retired” kimono get… the vast majority of people rent their wedding kimono… they’re cycled out due to damages and changes in style trends, usually being sold overseas or being thrown away. She’s showcasing a part of her culture on a global stage, her outfit will probably be preserved in a sporting museum.
