I think he needs a real rest and reset, however I really hope it’s not a full term retirement, it’s so easy to just not come back. That clean Yumadot will forever live in my mind as the example of the sport at perfection!

the fact that he specified for the 26-27 season and not just an unspecified period of time makes me feel a bit more optimistic about him not retiring

For those thinking soft retirement… most Japanese skaters don’t do that. When they retire, they make an announcement out of it and there’s finality. So I tend towards thinking this is a set break, with a defined comeback intended. A reminder that Yuma took the post-Beijing season off as well.

Yuma missed the entire 2022-23 season (due to injury) and came back as strong as ever, so he has precedent for missing the season after the Olympic year! If he wants to come back, I’m sure he won’t miss a beat.

This isn’t the first time he’s taken a break. During the 22/23 season he also took a break. So it has nothing to do with Alysa, but is likely much more about the fact that an Olympic season is incredibly demanding.

He won silver in everything. It’s almost impossible for him to win gold in something big with the current system while Ilia is still competing (disclaimer – I like Yuma much more, but it’s just a fact). I hope it’s not a full retirement though.

The last quad has been very hard work. Milano was looming over him from the second Beijing ended and I think it took its toll. Then he was injured, and I don’t think he’s found it easy being the ‘ace’. There’s been a lot of pressure from the media, the federation, and himself to live up to the legacy of Yuzuru & Shoma and to catch up to Ilia. It would be really nice for him to come back on his own terms with the pressure off.

I had to laugh at all the comments on Twitter saying that in Yuma’s honour, all events should not award silver medals this year lol.

I was there, the free skate in Prague. I could not hear the music for the last 30 seconds because we, the 18,000 people, were already screaming our heads off. The second he finished, it was impossible to sit down. The pure joy and beauty of that moment was incredible. How amazing to read that HE felt it too. He created that experience for us.

I’ve watched it back like 5 times and each time I get goosebumps that start at the Ina Bauer and don’t stop until the music stops. Truly a Hall of Fame skate, up there with the very best of Yuzuru or Yagudin.

In an era where technical content is prioritized over skating skills, it was so refreshing to see Yuma bring both at the highest level. It feels deeply unfair that he still hasn’t become world champion despite being the full package year after year. If that flawless free skate at Worlds turns out to be his last, I’m grateful I got to see it.

Shun’s been #2 only by a narrow margin this season, and he’s often outperformed Yuma in the FP. It’s a really interesting rivalry — Shun pushes to keep up with Yuma, and Yuma is pushed by Shun nipping at his heels. It’s going to be so interesting to see what happens with Rio in the mix.

It’s probably an easy choice to make given how strong the Japanese men are. Shun is a force to be reckoned with, and Rio moving up to seniors is sure to shake things up. Yuma can take a break without feeling like he’s letting anyone down and really focus on himself.
