I’m so glad they got their perfect Olympic moment and that performance will forever go down in history as one of the greatest we’ve ever seen. Not many can say they went out on top and their final performance was that epic.

I knew this was coming but I still wasn’t prepared. I’m beyond happy that they were able to retire on a good note 💙

Their free skate made me cry during the Olympics. I have been following figure skating since the mid 90s, and I bawled my eyes out when Ryuichi Kihara fell to his knees crying. I have watched that man for years, trying so hard to get that Olympic medal, and the stars just kept aligning against him. In the short program, he was the one who faltered while Riku skated clean. In the free skate, she was the stronger one, the one who refused to give up, and she carried him, that tiny little woman, to a world record and Olympic gold. Absolute cinema.

あのフリーは五輪中ずっと泣かされた。90年代半ばからフィギュアを見てきたけど、木原龍一が膝から崩れ落ちて泣いた時は号泣したよ。何年も追ってきた人なんだ。五輪メダルを死ぬほど欲しがって、なのに運命がずっと味方しなかった。SPで崩れたのは彼の方で、璃来はノーミス。フリーでは彼女が強い方で、決して諦めず、あの小さな身体で彼を、そしてチームを世界記録と五輪金まで運んでいった。完全に“映画”だった

I cried as a grown-ass man for 3 days (also during replays). Knowing their stories and following them for years made that skate very special to me. Ryuichi carried Japan’s pairs for 2 decades and that’s how he got lumbar spondylosis, lol.

いい大人の男が3日間泣いたよ（リプレイ見てる間も）。彼らの物語を知って何年も追ってきたから、あの演技は特別なんだ。龍一は20年も日本のペアを背負ってきて、そのせいで腰椎分離症になったくらいだからね…

He was so devastated after that error in the short program. So happy they were able to come back and win the gold!

SPのミスの後、彼は本当に打ちのめされてた。だからこそ、立て直して金を獲れたのが嬉しくてたまらない！

I get emotional when I think of his journey, and the fact that he never gave up — he has been to 4 Olympics, how crazy is that! Their Olympic free skate is one of those programs you go back to once in a while, to have a good cry.

Riku is just really tiny and the other guys are nearly 190 cm 😅 I think Ryuichi is on the taller side of the other Japanese guys.

Ryuichi was the more injured one in the partnership IIRC, but Riku basically said that if he retired, so would she, so it makes sense.

怪我が多かったのは龍一の方だったはず。でも璃来が「彼が引退するなら私もする」って言ってたから、納得の流れだよね

She said she doesn’t want to skate with another partner!

She has already had a great career and is an Olympic champion, even at a young age I understand that she wants to retire, and not skate with another partner, even if she could find one.

Ryuichi didn’t want a 3-hour railway round trip to Toronto for rehab anymore. Before moving to Canada, even as a two time Olympian, he received no skating-specific fitness guidance in Japan and mistakenly focused on muscle growth rather than explosive power. That paved the way for some injuries.

龍一はもう、リハビリのためにトロントまで往復3時間の電車通いをしたくなかったんだ。カナダに移る前は、2度の五輪出場者なのに日本ではスケート専門のフィジカル指導も受けられず、瞬発力より筋肥大に偏ってしまっていた。それが怪我の遠因になった

They will move into coaching pairs in Japan, as they have mentioned many times over the past several years. But I doubt it will happen immediately.

I would love it if they establish a Pairs training camp in Japan. Nagaoka/Moriguchi are great and will hold down the fort, but Japan needs depth of field, not just one great team at a time to carry the burden.

日本でペアの育成拠点を作ってくれたら最高。長岡＆森口は素晴らしくて砦を守ってくれるけど、日本に必要なのは層の厚さ。毎回ひと組だけが重荷を背負う状態じゃダメなんだ

I remember them with their old partners. They were really on the struggle bus, and it felt like the federation didn’t believe in them. Then they teamed up in 2019 and BOOM. They already leave behind such an extraordinary legacy. Just look at YunaSumi. Very excited for their coaching era!

I think this past Olympic cycle (2022-2026) just about retired every senior skater. It feels that since Yuzuru everyone has been following suit 😭 only fresh faces in 2030 haha (I joke ofc)

この五輪サイクル（2022-2026）でシニアの主力がほぼ総引退した感じ。羽生結弦以降、みんな後に続いてる気がする😭 2030年は新顔だけになるねw（冗談だけど）

Goddamn at the total team Japan rebrand happening. Veryyy strong group of young skaters but relative inexperience.

チームJapanの総リブランドがエグい。若手はめちゃくちゃ強い顔ぶれだけど、経験はまだこれからだね

As soon as they finished I was like “Well, the Gold is locked so everyone else can fight over silver and bronze.” Amazing performance.
